The .INTERNAL Domain Could Be The New Name For Your Home Network
Posted by: MarioMaiato - 01-31-2024, 04:14 PM - Forum: DNS & DNS Hosting - No Replies

The lords of the Internet propose doing away with an old, confusing IP identifier.

Anyone who’s set up a router probably understands that the IP address “192.168.x.x” signifies your local IP address. Anyone who hasn’t…doesn’t. And the global nonprofit which oversees the Internet’s address space wants to remove the confusion with a new domain: .INTERNAL.

So what, you might be saying. Most routers handle this thing behind the scenes! But just as routers have begun taking this over, a new crop of AI apps have begun using local IPs as a server interface, making it relevant once again.

On January 24, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers proposed the .INTERNAL domain (noted by The Register) as a solution to the local IP issue.

“There are certain circumstances where private network operators may wish to use their own domain naming scheme that is not intended to be used or accessible by the broader Domain Name System, such as within closed corporate or home networks, ICANN wrote. “IANA currently has demarcated special blocks of private-use IP addresses for such applications, but there is no comparable designated private-use namespace in the DNS. This has resulted in operational practices including informal use of top-level domains that have the potential to conflict with the root zone, or other designated purposes.”

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is a department of ICANN which assigns global IP addresses and zone management in the Domain Name System (DNS).

ICANN came down to two strings: .PRIVATE and .INTERNAL. It dropped the first because it felt that the term implied a higher degree of privacy, which isn’t true. ICANN will allow time for public comment, after which the board will vote on the adoption.

Again, it’s relatively rare for the average consumer to run into the local IP block in their daily activities. Some of the newer AI apps — variants of Stable Diffusion being one example — do, however. In those cases, installing the files creates a local “server” that you access via a Web GUI. While it’s still pretty clear that you’re pinging your own PC (virtually no one accesses a site via its numerical IP address) it’s not always clear to the average user that they’re not contacting a different server. The new .INTERNAL domain will try and make that crystal clear.

12 Ways To Upgrade Your Wi-Fi And Make Your Internet Faster
Posted by: MarioMaiato - 01-25-2024, 11:53 PM - Forum: WIFI Access Points - No Replies

WHETHER YOU'RE WORKING from home, binge-watching Netflix, or streaming your gameplay on Twitch, there's no such thing as too much bandwidth. Even if you have gigabyte fiber mainlined into your router, everyone could use help getting faster internet around the house. It doesn't matter if you have the best possible wires outside your house—eliminating subpar speeds and Wi-Fi dead zones is largely up to you. To help, here are some ways to troubleshoot and, hopefully, improve the quality of the Wi-Fi inside and outside your place.

1. Move Your Router
That router in the closet? Not a good idea. Walls, cupboards, and even bookshelves can potentially dampen your Wi-Fi signal. Physically moving the router can make a real difference to the speeds you get and how far its wireless transmissions can reach. The perfect spot will depend on your home, but try not to hide your router in a corner, under a cupboard, or inside a drawer—the more central and prominent it is, the better. For more info, read our guide to where to put your router for the best possible home Wi-Fi.

You might need to apply some creative cabling to get your router in a better place, but it's going to be worth the effort. The goal is to get your main devices—consoles, laptops, and so on—as close as possible to your router. Devices that don't need quite so much bandwidth, like smart thermostats, don't have to be a priority in terms of physical proximity.

For this reason, it's worth considering the look of your router when purchasing. If you buy a router you consider hideous, you’re much more likely to put it in a closet. Figure out the best spot given the location of your high-priority devices, then consider what's going to look good to you in that spot. If you don't have a flat surface near the best spot, you can mount your router halfway up a wall. If possible, keep it away from other devices that use electromagnetic waves; that includes baby monitors, wireless keyboards, and microwaves.

2. Use an Ethernet Cable
It's easy to forget that wires still exist! We don't, it's in our name, but it needs to be said: You don't need Wi-Fi. A wired connection to your router is faster and more stable than Wi-Fi, and it can't be affected by other devices or large fish tanks. The downside is that it limits where your devices can be, and it's less convenient.
Still, for hardware that needs the fastest internet possible—a gaming console, desktop PC, or streaming box, for example—it's often well worth the effort to run a wire. The router will have a handful of Ethernet ports to spare, so all you need is a cable.
To do a tidy job and avoid having wires trailing across your floor, you'll need to deploy some cable management. Small brackets like these ($9 for a pack of 40) keep the Ethernet cable fixed to the walls. If you have several cables running in the same direction, these wall mounts ($13 for a pack of 50) work well. For one or two gadgets, it can be worth the extra setup.

3. Change the Channel or Band
Wi-Fi signal is divided into channels. Your router uses a particular Wi-Fi channel to communicate with the devices around your home. If you have close neighbors who have routers using the same Wi-Fi channel, then everything can get congested quickly. Switching channels can solve this problem.

Every router will handle this differently. Check its documentation or look up the instructions online if you're not sure, but you should be able to find the option somewhere in the device settings. Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the ones to try, as they'll have the least interference when multiple devices get hooked up.

Most routers now use dual-band technology, broadcasting at the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz frequencies. If your router settings allow you, you might be able to prioritize one or the other for certain devices—the 5-GHz band will get you a faster connection to the internet, though it has a shorter range than 2.4 GHz. We suggest leaving both frequencies enabled since older devices will often work only on 2.4 GHz.

4. Upgrade Your Router
Routers vary significantly in functionality and price. If you have dead or slow zones in your house, you probably need to change where and how far your Wi-Fi is broadcast. If you have a large home, you're likely better off with a router that can pair with "repeaters" that broadcast signals into the farthest reaches of your space. Smaller homes and apartments can generally get by with a simpler system. Read our router buying guide for more details.
For larger homes, we recommend a mesh network, where you install multiple router nodes around your house.

5. Understanding the Wi-Fi Number Soup
Wi-Fi 6 has just made it into most of the devices and routers we've been testing over the past few years, and already Wi-Fi 7 is waiting in the wings. Then there's Wi-Fi 6E. What does it all mean and which should you get? Have a look at our guides to each: Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and Wi-Fi 7 for the full details. We've even delved into the question, should you upgrade to Wi-Fi 7? The short story is, at this point, if you can afford it, go for it. Wi-Fi 7, the successor to Wi-Fi 6E, boasts faster connections for more devices and that's going to mean faster internet overall.

Wi-Fi 7 will help deliver high-quality video and better cloud gaming, and it will help with AR and VR applications that require high throughput and low latency, both of which Wi-Fi 7 improves.

6. Get a Wi-Fi Extender
If messing around with your router settings seems too daunting, and you have a few dollars to spare, invest in a Wi-Fi extender or repeater. These devices plug into a spare wall socket, connect to the wireless internet getting beamed out by your router, and extend it.

They're (usually) simple to set up, easy to use, and can instantly get rid of Wi-Fi dead zones in your house. The extended or repeated wireless signals won't be as strong as the ones coming straight from your router, so, again, positioning is important. Try to use these devices to connect gadgets that don't need a huge amount of bandwidth.

7. Use Your Electrical Wiring
An alternative to extenders is a power line kit. Digital signals can pass through electrical wiring, and power line devices are designed to take advantage of this. Several manufacturers make power line networking kits, including Netgear ($120, Amazon) and TP-Link ($60, Amazon).

It works like this: You connect a power line plug to your router, then put the plug into a wall socket. Add another power line plug in any other room in your house, and it can provide a wired or wireless connection to that room. There will be some drop in speed, but it's a simple and effective option. Unless your home is particularly old, it should have electrical wiring that supports this, but it's best to buy your kit from a retailer with a robust return policy just in case.

8. Add a Password to Your Wi-Fi
We probably don't have to tell you this, but you need a password on your Wi-Fi network. It's good for keeping hackers away and keeping neighbors from Netflixing off of your bandwidth, which will slow you down. Make sure you use AES encryption, which is both the most secure and most speed-friendly security option.

9. Cut Off Unused Devices
Having dozens of things tapping into the Wi-Fi at once can be problematic. Plug anything you can into Ethernet, and unplug anything you have connected but don't need (like that "smart" tea kettle you never once got to work). Make sure only the things that need internet get internet.

Good routers (all of the routers listed above, for example) offer controls to prioritize a particular device or service. It's a handy way to make sure your games never get interrupted by someone else streaming videos on Facebook.

10. Check Your PC
This tip is specific to computers: If the internet on your PC or laptop is perpetually slow but other devices seem fine, open your Task Manager or Activity Monitor and see which programs are running in the background. Certain programs could be set to auto-update that don't need to be. If they're always updating in the background, that could be the cause of your slow internet. Check it out and adjust the settings.

11. Restart Your Router?
We've read this tip many times on the web, but we were skeptical. Restarting your router regularly sounds like an extension of the age-old pseudo-solution to everything digital: Reboot it. Yes, we know restarting your router can sometimes fix dead internet, but we asked router maker Netgear: Does regularly rebooting your router help speed things up? The short answer is, probably not.

Sandeep Harpalani, vice president of product management at Netgear, says the company does not recommend rebooting its routers “unless you actually encounter issues with connectivity or slowdowns due to radio frequency interference.” He adds that if you're still using 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi and you're having speed troubles, rebooting might help, since it will force the router to choose the best channel with the least interference during boot-up. If you've made the jump to 5 GHz, it will automatically switch to the channel with the least amount of interference.

Either way, there's no reason to reboot regularly. If you are having persistent problems, then it may be worth restarting your router, but for the most part, stick with our other tips.

12. Call Your ISP
If you've tried it all and still have problems, you can always contact your internet service provider. They may send a service technician out, who might be able to pinpoint an overlooked issue that is getting in the way of you and fast Wi-Fi.

How To Protect Yourself From IPhone Thieves Locking You Out Of Your Own Device
Posted by: MarioMaiato - 01-25-2024, 11:42 PM - Forum: Smart Phones. Android, iPhone - No Replies

A complex but concerning method of gaining control over a user’s iPhone and permanently locking them out the device appears to be on the rise.

Some iPhone thieves are exploiting a security setting, called the recovery key, that makes it nearly impossible for owners to access their photos, messages, data and more, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report. Some victims also told the publication their bank accounts were drained after the thieves gained access to their financial apps.

It’s important to note, however, this type of takeover is hard to pull off. It requires a criminal essentially watching an iPhone user enter the device’s passcode – for example, by looking over their shoulder at a bar or sporting event – or manipulating the device’s owner so they’ll share their passcode. And that’s all before they physically steal the device.

An Apple spokesperson told CNN people can use Face ID or Touch ID when unlocking their phone in public to avoid revealing their passcode to anyone who might be watching.

Users can also set up a longer, alphanumeric passcode that’s harder for bad actors to figure out. Device owners should also change the passcode immediately if they believe someone else has seen it.

Screen Time settings
Another step someone could consider is a hack not necessarily endorsed by Apple but one that’s been circulating online. Within an iPhone’s Screen Time setting, which allows guardians to set up restrictions on how kids can use the device, there is the option to set up a secondary password that would be required from any user before they could successfully change an Apple ID.

By enabling this, a thief would be prompted for that secondary password before changing an Apple ID password.

Back up phone regularly
Finally, users can protect themselves by regularly backing up an iPhone – via iCloud or iTunes – so data can be recovered in the case an iPhone is stolen. At the same time, users may want to consider storing important photos or other sensitive files and data in another cloud service, such as Google Photos, Microsoft OneDrive, Amazon Photos or Dropbox.

This won’t stop a bad actor from gaining access to the device, but it should limit some of the fallout if it ever should happen.

Diablo 4 Season 3: Season Of The Construct Details Explained
Posted by: RyujiSaeki - 01-18-2024, 04:30 AM - Forum: Gaming - No Replies

Many Diablo players must be looking forward to Diablo 4 Season 3. Not long ago, the official finally announced the name, theme and all new content of Season 3.

The third season of Diablo 4 is called Season of the Construct. Like the vampire powers obtained in the second season, in the third season, we can also obtain powerful skills after completing the seasonal quest line. But unlike Season of Blood, this season we will get a spider companion named “Seneschal” in the game, and players can build a customized general manager according to their own ideas. Using unique magic stone items and combining them to adjust its attack methods, giving it lightning or barrier protection is a good choice.

As the universal currency in the game, Diablo 4 Gold will definitely be of great help to players in the game. Like in Season of Blood, although Duriel/Varshan sets are the main demand, gold is still the common currency in the game and can provide great help in many places. Therefore, if you want to gain powerful power first in Season 3, gold is the biggest help. If you want to get a large amount of Diablo 4 Gold in a short period, buying at IGGM is a superb choice. The cheapest and safest gold is sold here, and the delivery speed is very fast, which can meet the needs of players in a timely manner.

The so-called magic stone items are items dropped in Season 3 and can be dropped in “Arcane Tremor” in the open world and in the seasonal dungeon called “The Vault”. Players can equip Seneschal with gems to obtain corresponding skills. Since there are 12 “governing” stones and 27 “tuning” stones of varying rarity, players can build a “Seneschal” that suits their own play style and enjoy your Diablo journey.

Don’t worry about your Seneschal being upgraded to the point of being useless. It will change with the character’s power, so players can upgrade their Seneschal to their heart’s content.

Season 3 will kick off in the sand dunes of Kejistan, where players will battle demons. We discover an artifact called the Loom created by returning character Zoltun Kulle, which has been corrupted by the demon Malphas. All we need to do is fight Malphas, the new boss of this season. After all, the treasury will be the main source of loot this season. Players will eventually receive rewards after completing challenges and avoiding various traps.

Season of the Construct also brings some quality of life changes. Most notable is WASD key control support, which allows for more direct control of characters on PC, making this trap-laden season that much easier.

There are also various game details. Please consult IGGM for more information. There is also a coupon code “WATER” (5% OFF), which can be used universally for all items related to Diablo 4, so that players can get greater help in Season of the Construct.

Posting Cover Songs On YouTube? What You Need To Know
Posted by: MarioMaiato - 01-11-2024, 11:53 AM - Forum: General Support - No Replies

Songs are protected by copyright, and if you don’t get the right licenses, your YouTube cover song could be removed and you risk losing your entire channel.

If you're a musician growing your audience, you've probably considered posting cover songs on YouTube. YouTube cover songs are a great way for unknown or indie artists in the music business to pique fans' interest and can help grow a channel. But there are also pitfalls.

Creators need to take steps to avoid getting into legal trouble for making a cover song or cover video and being aware of basic tenets of intellectual property law will go a long way toward protecting you. Here's what you need to know about posting cover songs on YouTube.

What are cover songs?
A cover song or cover version is a musician's interpretation of a song composed by another artist.

Some musical acts may choose to play someone else's song strictly as it is known popularly by the original artist. Others may choose to change the original version by adding their touch or making a music video of a cover song. This is a great way for a band to expand its audience internationally without having to go on a world tour.

According to the U.S. Copyright Office, you can use music that falls into one of two categories:

Music within the public domain.
Music you've been granted permission to use from the copyright owner directly.
How do you legally post cover songs on YouTube?
There are several misunderstandings surrounding the use of YouTube covers. Here are some rules you must follow to upload a YouTube cover song:

All artists must seek permission to post a cover song not in the public domain on their YouTube channel.
The artist must define all intended uses and compare them with the exclusive rights of the copyright to ensure that the song is being used legally.
Attempting to make contact with the rights holder does not mean legal permission is automatically granted.
According to YouTube's copyright policy, creators are prohibited from using content, such as a cover song video, that someone else owns the copyright to without permission.

Cover song licensing
There are several steps you must take to ensure that you're using a cover song legally when posting cover songs on YouTube.

1. Consult an intellectual property law attorney
An intellectual property law attorney, or IP attorney, works to help artists and creators protect their intellectual property.

While there are many kinds of intellectual property, in this instance, we are talking about copyrighted material, which can include literary works, dramatic pieces, musicals, artistic creations, poetry, novels, movies, and songs.

An IP attorney can advise a client on the legal rights involved with protecting intellectual property, represent clients in the courtroom, offer support with understanding legal documents, and more.

2. Locate the copyright owner
U.S. law protects the rights of the song owner to record, publicly perform, and distribute a song. An IP attorney can help an artist find the copyright holder of a song before releasing a cover. These public listings of copyright owners can be found using resources from BMI, ASCAP, and the U.S. Copyright Office.

3. Contact the copyright owner
The IP attorney should send a notice of intention to the owner of the song at least 30 days before recording and public release. The letter must detail how the cover artist intends to use the cover song.

If it is difficult to find the owner of the copyright, the IP attorney can send a letter to the U.S. Copyright Office detailing that the copyright holder's address is unknown.

4. Pay royalty fees
The artist must pay a fee to purchase a necessary mechanical license for the legal use of the song, which you can get from the Harry Fox Agency.

A mechanical license is required by U.S. copyright law for those who want to create and distribute recordings of an original composition written by someone other than the artist creating the cover song.

However, to use the song in a video, the artist must pay statutory mechanical royalties for each use of the song based on rates determined by the Copyright Royalty Board.

The mechanical license only covers the audio portion of your YouTube cover.

To post a video along with the song, you'll need a synchronization license, also called a “sync" license. You must negotiate a sync license (sometimes spelled synch license) with the song's copyright holder. While copyright owners must grant mechanical licenses, they are not required to give you a sync license, nor is there a set fee for the license.

According to YouTube's copyright policy, creators are prohibited from using content, such as a cover song, that someone else owns the copyright to without permission.

What happens when you post a cover song without permission?
If an artist chooses to ignore the copyright laws set forth by YouTube and the U.S. Copyright Office, there may be several consequences.

Demonetization of content
A copyright infringement claim on YouTube usually leads to the demonetization of content. Should the copyright holder find out the artist is using their song without legal permission, they can choose to monetize the video themselves and receive all royalties.

Muting the content
The copyright owner can choose to mute the content, meaning that the video will be available for viewing, but there will be no sound. This can lead to viewers disengaging from the content, and a drop in viewer count.

Blocking the content
The copyright holder can choose to block the content, making the video unavailable. If the artist receives three copyright strikes, there is a chance that the entire channel can be taken down.

Final tips on avoiding copyright claims on YouTube
It is important to note that placing a disclaimer in the YouTube video's description is not a replacement for obtaining proper permission to utilize a song.

Here is what an artist can do instead to avoid copyright claims on their YouTube videos.

Use your original songs and content: Using your own songs, original music, or royalty-free music is the only way to ensure that the original artist does not obtain copyright strikes on their channel. You can use royalty-free music as a backdrop to your own lyrics and video content.

Fair use laws do not apply to cover songs. Although an artist's very own version of a song may be different from the original track, it does not mean that the song can be used in a YouTube video without proper permission.

If your YouTube channel has problems using a cover song, there is an official process to resolve a copyright claim.

FAQ: Posting YouTube cover songs
Can cover songs be monetized on YouTube?

According to YouTube, eligible cover songs can be monetized on a pro-rata basis provided the creator of the original song is a participant in the YouTube Partner Program.

Can I cover a song without permission?

If a sound recording of the song is not in the public domain, then the artist must seek permission to use it on their YouTube channel, or they may face a copyright claim.

Can I use album covers on YouTube?

If the album cover is copyright-protected, then the creator must obtain permission to use it from the record label or copyright holder. YouTube does not grant permission to use copyrighted material.

What other songs are you allowed to cover?

A creator can cover any song published in the public domain. Otherwise, you must obtain a license.

Copyright law and YouTube
YouTube is a great tool for offering unknown artists exposure to local and global audiences. However, it is up to the artist to do their due diligence when it comes to protecting their art and the creations of others.

Understanding copyright law and obtaining proper licenses is important to ensure that you can create and share your work without suffering legal consequences.

Asus’ New Laptop Has Two Screens And A Removable Keyboard
Posted by: MarioMaiato - 01-09-2024, 10:53 PM - Forum: New Technologies - No Replies

The new Zenbook Duo aims to Lenovo’s Yoga Book 9i with a pair of 14-inch OLED displays for a total of 19.8 inches of screen real estate.

Asus is back with another Zenbook Duo, the latest device in its range of dual-screened laptops. But rather than including a small secondary display above this laptop’s keyboard like previous Duos, the revamped version for 2024 has two equally sized 14-inch screens. They’re both OLED, with resolutions of up to 2880 x 1800, aspect ratios of 16:10, and a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. Between them, they offer a total of 19.8 inches of usable screen real estate.
It’s a similar approach to the one Lenovo took with last year’s dual-screen Yoga Book 9i, albeit with a couple of tweaks. Like Lenovo, Asus gives you a choice of typing on the lower touchscreen via a virtual keyboard or by using a detachable physical Bluetooth keyboard. But what’s different here is that Asus’ keyboard has a trackpad built in, so you don’t have to use it in combination with an on-screen trackpad.

Asus envisages you using the new Zenbook Duo in a few different configurations. There’s a standard laptop mode, where the bottom screen is entirely covered by a traditional keyboard and trackpad. Or you can rest the keyboard on your desk and have the two screens arranged vertically for “Dual Screen” mode or horizontally for “Desktop” mode. Finally, there’s “Sharing” mode, which has you ditch the keyboard entirely and lay the laptop down on a flat surface with both its screens facing up and away from each other, presumably so you can share your work with a colleague sitting across the desk from you.

Naturally, having launched a year later than its competitor, the Asus Zenbook Duo is also packed with more modern hardware. It can be specced with up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H processor and 32GB of RAM, up to 2TB of storage, and a 75Wh battery. Connectivity includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a USB-A port, HDMI out, and a 3.5mm jack, and the laptop can be used with Asus’ stylus. The Bluetooth keyboard is designed to be carried between the two screens when the laptop isn’t in use and can charge by attaching to pogo pins on the edges of the lower screen.

The Zenbook Duo (2024) is just one of the many laptops Asus has at CES this year. Alongside it, the company has new Vivobook laptops, including the 15.6-inch Vivobook Pro 15 OLED, which can be specced with up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor alongside a dedicated Nvidia RTX GPU as well as up to 24GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. It also has 15- and 16-inch Vivobook S series laptops, which are also available with OLED screens and come with a choice of the latest Intel and AMD processors but no mention of dedicated GPUs.

Finally, there’s a handful of TUF-branded gaming laptops, including new TUF Gaming F16, A16, and A15 models. The F16 has an Intel Core i7 13650HX processor and Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU, while the A16 gets you an AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX and RTX 4070. Both have a choice of 16-inch 165Hz LCDs (though exact resolutions vary), up to 32GB RAM, and 2TB storage. Meanwhile, the smaller TUF Gaming A15 is available with an AMD Ryzen 8000-series processor with an RTX 4070 GPU, a 15-inch 2.5K LCD with a 165Hz refresh rate, up to 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage. All three laptops can be upgraded with more RAM and storage.

We’ve followed up with Asus for US pricing and release date information for its new laptop lineup. But in the UK, the Zenbook Duo will be available from the end of January starting at £1,699.99 (around $2,161), and the Vivobook Pro 15 OLED will start at £1,599.99 (around $2,034). The Vivobook S series will start at £999.99 (around $1,271) in the UK, where it will be available sometime in Q1.
